A blue heron at Otama pond
The winning runner was past me before I knew it. He was from Aoyama Gakuen and was a good 5 minutes ahead of the others.
And pictures of the frozen pond. This pond is more exposed than Otama pond, so had a thicker layer of ice.
In one spot along the trail we got a bit of a view of the Pacific ocean in the distance.
Reflections on the thin ice in the pond
Komazawa University was the favorite, but came in second
Blowing snow on the ice
There was a big difference in ambient temperature between the sun and the shade.
Mt. Fuji from a high spot on the trail
More reflections and a bit of snow
Meidai University was third
We ignored a sign to stay away from the pond because of wild boars. We did see signs of them, but didn't encounter any.
More woodland winter foliage on the way back to Otama pond and the car
We saw signs of deer, wild boar and probably rabbits.
The south end of the pond has a little museum
Day 2 was a hike along Hakone skyline. This was taken from the parking lot.
Another view of Fuji and the Hakone Skyline Drive
Winter foliage on the trail between the ponds
We didn't watch the whole race, but hiked around Shojin pond where we took pictures of the buddhas carved in the rocks.
A breach in the bamboo walls gave us a view of the road, toll gate and Fuji
Icicles dripping from the vent in front of our door. The orange is the roof of the adjacent apartment.
